Unveiled: Revolutionary Discovery of a Neanderthal-Human Hybrid Child's Skeleton
Researchers have determined the age of an ancient child’s skeleton, which exhibits characteristics from both humans and Neanderthals, ranging from 27,700 to 28,600 years ago.
The almost fully intact skeleton of the 'Lapedo child' was found 27 years ago in a rock shelter known as Lagar Velho in central Portugal. Portugal It had turned red, and experts believe it might have been covered with a painted animal hide prior to being buried.
Previously, researchers observed that certain features of the humanoid child, such as their body structure and jawbone, appeared Neanderthal-like. They proposed that this child might have originated from groups where Homo sapiens and Neanderthals interbred and merged.
Although it seemed like an extreme idea back then, advancements in genetic research have confirmed these populations did indeed exist—individuals living today continue to possess Neanderthal DNA.
However, determining precisely when the child lived has proven challenging.
Tiny roots had penetrated the skeletal remains, and pollution from vegetation or other origins rendered it impractical for researchers to employ conventional carbon-dating methods to determine the child's age. Consequently, they opted to date the surrounding charcoal and animal bones, which were estimated to be between 27,700 and 29,700 years old.
Methods have advanced, and scientists reported in the journal Science Advances on Friday that they managed to determine the age of the skeleton by analyzing a specific protein predominantly present in human bones.
Inspecting a portion of a damaged arm, they confirmed that the previous estimation was accurate: the skeleton dated back to somewhere between 27,700 and 28,600 years ago.
"Successfully dating the child felt as though we were returning a small fragment of their history, which is a tremendous honor," said Bethan Linscott, a study co-author currently at the University of Miami, via email.
She observed that the initial find included more than just a skeleton—it was also the final resting place of a young child. While determining the age of the remains, she found herself pondering over those who had cherished the child, what brought joy to their little life, and how they experienced the brief span of four years on this earth.
Paul Pettitt, an archaeologist from Durham University in England who wasn’t part of this latest research, commented in an email that the study demonstrates how improved dating techniques are enabling scientists to gain deeper insights into history.
Studying human origins holds significance "because we maintain pictures of our ancestors," stated study author João Zilhão from the University of Lisbon.
