Putin Agrees to Ceasefire in Ukraine Conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that he concurs in principle with a US suggestion of a 30-day truce in Ukraine. However, he noted that the specifics still require negotiation. He also stressed that this ceasefire must serve as a foundation for enduring peace.

So the concept is valid, and we fully endorse it," Putin stated at a press briefing in Moscow. "However, there are matters that require discussion, and I believe these discussions should involve our American counterparts and collaborators.

He emphasized the importance of establishing a system to monitor potential violations of the truce. Additionally, he raised the question of whether Ukraine might utilize the 30-day cease-fire period for further mobilization and rearming efforts.

“We agree with the proposals to halt the fighting, but we proceed from the assumption that the ceasefire should lead to lasting peace and remove the root causes of the crisis,” Putin said.

Putin stated that although it seemed the U.S. convinced Ukraine to agree to a truce, Ukraine is keen on this due to their current military circumstances. He pointed out that Ukrainian forces who had penetrated Russian territory near the Kursk region will likely find themselves entirely encircled within days.

“In these conditions, I believe it would be good for the Ukrainian side to secure a ceasefire for at least 30 days,” he said.

Regarding the Ukrainian soldiers stationed at Kursk, he asked, "Shall everyone present there emerge without engaging in combat?"

Putin expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for his significant focus on resolving the situation in Ukraine.

He extended his gratitude to the leaders of China, India, Brazil, and South Africa for their "honorable mission to halt the conflict and reduce casualties," which indicated these nations' possible role in facilitating a truce agreement.

Russia stated that it will not agree to have peacekeeping forces from any NATO countries to oversee a potential ceasefire.
