Health Minister Mark Holland bows out of Upcoming Election Race

OTTAWA — On Thursday, Health Minister Mark Holland stated that he will not be running for reelection in the upcoming federal vote. His announcement came merely a day before Mark Carney is scheduled to be sworn in as prime minister.

Holland, representing the constituency of Ajax located near Toronto, stated in a social media update on Thursday that "it's time to head back."

"Thanks to all the volunteers, advocates, and friends who allowed me to stand beside you in this journey,” Holland stated. “I will remain by your side; however, from now on, it will be outside of my official capacity since I have decided not to run in the upcoming election.”

Holland initially won the election in 2004, serving until 2011 when he lost. However, he made a comeback in 2015 and has been representing the constituency ever since.

Holland has held multiple positions such as being the leader of the government in the House of Commons and serving as the chief government whip. Since July 2023, he has taken up the role of health minister.

He has consistently advocated for women’s rights to make their own choices and has spearheaded discussions with provinces regarding both the dental care initiative and the national pharmacare plan. The federal administration has entered into accords with three regions to ensure access to funding for contraception and diabetes treatments.

On Sunday, Carney secured an overwhelming win in the Liberal leadership race and will be inaugurated as Canada’s 24th prime minister during a ceremony at Rideau Hall on Friday. At this event, he plans to unveil his newly formed cabinet, anticipated to comprise fewer positions than the current 37 held by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s administration.

Carney has pledged a "smooth" and "swift" transition.

Holland, who supported former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland in the leadership contest, expressed on social media on March 9 his enthusiasm about collaborating with Carney “to make Canada a nation where fairness and freedom prevail for all.”

A week later, he stated his intention to depart from politics.

On Thursday, Holland stated that he feels incredibly fortunate to have served his community.

Holland expressed gratitude, saying, 'I've had the immense luck of working alongside the finest, most delightful individuals.' He added, 'It truly has been quite an adventure.'
