Guerrero Jr. Silences Critics Through Action, Not Words
DUNEDIN, Fla. — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. found himself at the heart of the discussion within the Toronto Blue Jays camp on Thursday. However, paradoxically, he was somewhat absent from the spotlight as well.
Stay with me now.
Two days prior, information was released regarding Guerrero Jr.'s discussions with the Blue Jays regarding his contract , providing a little more clarity on where the two sides stand. With Wednesday’s off day, Thursday morning arrived with a hope that the pending free agent could offer his thoughts on what’s become the storyline of the year so far for the organization.
This did not occur, however, since Guerrero Jr. turned down an opportunity to discuss his contract status with the media when approached via a statement from a Blue Jays representative at the team’s player development facility.
This then put manager John Schneider in the position of addressing queries regarding his high-profile star player at first base.
Schneider was queried about his views on how Guerrero Jr. has managed all the attention.
He has been doing well," said Schneider. "The more everyone discusses it, the more he seems compelled to discuss it too. During our conversations, his main focus appears to be solely on this. Even though certain aspects might appear different, his primary objective is simply to come here each day with the aim of winning.
I can't imagine what it's like to walk in his boots, but he has managed it quite admirably.
The final point holds true for many individuals in baseball since Guerrero Jr. finds himself in an exceptionally rare position that very few others have encountered. As he approaches his 26th birthday on Sunday, he stands poised to become a free agent at the conclusion of this season, potentially securing a deal worth more than $500 million.
To the casual onlooker, the contract impasse between him and the team doesn't seem to have altered how Vladimir Guerrero Jr. conducts himself. He remains his usual cheerful self, and it’s not uncommon at the Blue Jays' player development facility to spot him playfully teasing his teammates and cracking jokes with a wide grin.
It might be simple to classify this scenario as a "distraction," yet the truth likely hits spectators and journalists harder than it does the athletes. Players have numerous concerns beyond what their peers are preoccupied with, particularly since training camps for teams like the Blue Jays have been proceeding smoothly without significant setbacks, resulting in an overall positive atmosphere.
When I inquired with George Springer lately about what had him most enthusiastic for the upcoming season, his reply provided somewhat of a reality check.
“ I believe our team as a whole," Springer stated. "The players are eager to get started. Of course, we've got more time ahead in spring training, yet everyone seems aligned with the message we’ve been sharing internally. The squad is prepared and enthusiastic about tackling the challenges of a 162-game season, aiming to return us to the competitive standing we aspire to achieve.
Since his arrival in 2021, Springer has taken charge, but Schneider mentioned that the Blue Jays have requested Guerrero Jr. to assume more of this leadership responsibility, and he has risen to meet that challenge.
Regardless of whether he wants it or not, when someone excels greatly, they often end up taking on leadership roles or becoming the prominent figure within their team," explained Schneider about Guerrero Jr. "He clearly recognizes that his words carry weight and people pay attention when he speaks. We have encouraged him to step into such a role even more this season, and he has performed admirably.
On Thursday, Guerrero Jr. set an example through his performance as the Blue Jays secured a 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in the Grapefruit League game at TD Ballpark.
In the opening frame, he secured a hustling two-bagger when the ball eluded the shortstop and came to rest in the shallows of the outfield grass near left-center. His dive for second base was met with cheers from the spectators, which were echoed again when he advanced boldly to third on the subsequent play by tagging up.
In the subsequent inning, Guerrero Jr. shone with his fielding skills when he dove gracefully to his right as the first baseman and swiftly stood back up to launch a throw towards home plate. Although the runner managed to be safe by just a thread, Guerrero Jr.'s motivated play still caught everyone’s attention.
Further along in the match, he hit a 117.6 m.p.h. single into left field.
Therefore, on a day when Guerrero Jr. chose not to speak, he conveyed his message through actions instead.
